He’s Not Here
The producer visits our Washington office. The Washington group is in a difficult place. The client has not been behaving well. The CTO, Ed Kowalski, has vanished after a moral argument in which his claims seem to be decidedly selfish. The CEO, Abby Alton, has had a disastrous public presentation. Part of the disaster was her making but part of it came from protesters who were trying to goad her into a misstep.
The Producer has come to Washington to talk with the HWMS staff. There is nothing operational he can do. He’s not involved in the day to day action. He doesn’t know what has been done. He doesn’t know the options for the group. His job is to minimize the risk of the contract. If it is likely to succeed, which means that HWMS will get publicity and the opportunity for more contracts, he may add some resources to the task. If it is likely to fail, he will end it as inexpensively as he can. He is trying to determine the facts of the matter.
The Producer very quickly loses control of the meeting. Karine asks questions and makes comments in ways that slightly irritate the Producer. However, the Producer does ultimately make the point that he wants and then quickly departs.
